No matter how tough it gets, it’s never a good decision to abandon our furry best friends. But it’s also hard to judge anyone if we’re not in their shoes. And for one dog owner, there is no choice left but to abandon her pit bull because she could no longer give the care he needed.
Fatty McFat was found inside a crate, abandoned behind a veterinary hospital in Connecticut. He looked frightened being inside the cage. Fatty had an owner, who also happened to leave a heartbreaking note explaining why the dog had to be abandoned.
Fatty’s owner indicated in the letter that he was very much loved.
His owner recently went homeless and fell ill, leaving her unable to care for Fatty.
As stated in the letter, the owner had tried rehoming Fatty but failed each time. Different departments have been contacted but the reaction has always been that nobody cared. As a desperate measure, she left McFatty behind Litchfield Hills Veterinary Animal Hospital in a shaded area hoping to find someone who would take care of him.
According to Patch, an unidentified caller called the facility to inform what she had done. It was also reported that Fatty had been living in a car with his owner for two months before he was abandoned. He has a history of bites, which is why the owner had difficulty in finding a new owner for him.
At the moment, Fatty is now under the care of Simon Foundation and he’s staying there free of charge.
The abandoned pit bull needs to be neutered and also needs to go on a behavior management.
Harwinton First Selectman Michael Criss told Patch that Fatty’s story is a reminder that abandoning an animal is not the solution in times of financial crisis.
“In this tough economy, this situation is not uncommon, unfortunately. However, it is never a solution to abandon an animal. It’s like abandoning your child at the mall; you wouldn’t do that, so why would you abandon your animal?”
Criss added that owners should realize that there are many options than just leaving an animal behind.
