Family Surrenders Pit Bull To Shelter Because The Dog Is ‘Too Nice’

Sometimes pet owners surprise you of their reasons why they choose to surrender their dogs to the shelter. For this one poor pit bull, this couldn’t be any truer.

Meet the sweet loving pit bull, Helena!

In September last year, Helena was rescued by volunteers in Atlanta, Georgia, after found wandering the streets. Quickly after her rescue, the sweet dog was adopted and everyone at the shelter was so happy that she was given another chance in life. She was going to be with a loving family who is willing to give her unconditional love.

Unfortunately, earlier this week, his family returned the pit bull to the LifeLine Animal Project for some very odd reason.

“The man who returned her said she was too nice,” Karen Hirsch, public relations director for the shelter, said during an interview with The Dodo. “It was obvious the gentleman was looking for a guard dog. He also suggested she be adopted by a woman ‘because they are more into that petting stuff.’”

According to shelter staff, they have seen many pets surrendered for so many different reasons, but this may be the strangest one yet. His owners may have picked Helena because of the “tough dog” stereotypes surrounding pit bulls. When they realized that she wasn’t what they wanted, they returned her back to the shelter.

Now, Helena is looking for a new family. She is now looking for people who are willing to accept her for who she is – a sweet loving pit bull. In the meantime, Helena is giving all the slobbery smooches her heart desires to staff members at the shelter.

“She loves to lay around, be pet, give kisses and eat treats,” Hirsch said. “She is a calm dog who would love Netflix binges.”

Helena would be perfect for kids because of his laid-back, sweet loving personality.

The shelter is currently accepting applications for her and, while they don’t provide transportation, are welcoming out-of-state adoptions as well.

“We want Helena to go to a home where she can be smothered in love,” Hirsch said. “If you are looking for a dog to love who doesn’t require lots of activity, she could be the perfect girl for you.”
