A tragic incident happened on March 2, 2017 when a mother threw his 9-year-old son in the river in an attempt to drown him. However, a pit bull named Buddy jump into the river to rescue the boy and he saved his life.
Now, the hero dog is still in the custody of the authorities while the incident is being investigated. However, Buddy’s family is starting to wonder when they can get their beloved dog back to them.
The mother of the boy faces charges of murder and attempted murder after drowning her 5-year-old and attempting to drown his other child.
According to the Murray River Council interim general manager, Margot Stork, Buddy is still under the custody of the authorities as they are working to get suitable conditions for the dog to return to his family.
In the report, the mother allegedly tried to drown her children in the Murray River on March 2. Buddy saw the incident and immediately jumped into action by biting the little boy to drag him away from his mother. The pit bull also bit the woman as she continues to grab the boy.
Thanks to Buddy’s quick action, the 9-year-old survived; however, the little brother died of drowning.
Buddy’s owners have already started a Go Petition to get their beloved dog returned to them.
“We are trying to save our dog ‘Buddy’ a pit bull cross who has been seized due to awful circumstances by the council. We are hoping the council can see what this dog was trying to do and let him come home instead of punishing him for the rescue efforts he has done. Please help,” the family stated.
The story immediately spread and 50,000 people signed the petition, which forced the officials to release the dog back to his human family.
The Murray River Council issued a statement saying that the dog was likely “acting in reasonable defense” of the boy.
The boy’s grandfather also took part in the petition.
“I own a similar dog and I know he was trying to save the boys, it’s their nature when they are raised with kids. Let the ones who his actions affected decide. I have one grandson left, because this brave dog took action as required,” said the grandfather to Daily Mail.
