When a staff member at DeKalb County Animal Services, in Georgia, discovered a man curled up asleep outside the front door of their office, she thought he was homeless. After investigating, she found out that the mysterious person had not chosen the spot merely as a safe ground during the night.

It appears that the homeless man had lost his dog, which he considers as his best friend, and was desperate to get her back.

“Our kennel tech woke him up, and the man said his dog had gone missing,” Karen Hirsch, spokesperson for the shelter, told The Dodo.

According to volunteers, the man is said to have spent all the money he had collected for bus rides to the rescue center hoping that his dog had been found. Luckily, the man’s dog was indeed been rescued by volunteers as a stray less than two weeks ago; however, she was being kept at the animal group’s new service center across town.

The people at the shelter realized that the man had no other way of getting to their new facility other than walking, volunteers decided to give him enough money to cover the cost of the train ride.

The dog had been taken care of by the rescuers at the new facility, who they named Tata. According to the homeless man, Tata was happy and healthy before he lost her. He said that he may not have all the expensive possessions in the world, but he and his dog were rich with love.

And people at the center saw that as soon as they reunite.

“You could see the joy in his face when they were reunited. It was wonderful. The joy for both of them was palpable. It lifted everyone’s spirit to see it. Love is love, no matter who it’s coming from,” Hirsch said. “He probably puts the dog first in his life, because without her he doesn’t have anything.”

The DeKalb County Animal Services also waived all the fees for the man, so they can be together again. The shelter also offered assistance should the homeless man and his dog needs it in the future.

“Some people don’t understand giving a pet back to a homeless person, but some of those people take better care of their pets than some of us with homes,” Hirsch said. “If you see a homeless person with a pet, and are hesitant to give them money, you can give them dog food, or even flea medicine. They also need bottles of water. Just basic supplies that humans and dogs can use. Their pet is sometimes the only thing they have in their lives.”
