Missing For 10 Years, A Black Lab Is Returned To Her Owners

52

There are already countless stories of pets going missing and finding their way back home, but the story of Abby, a black lab, is something unique and beautiful.

A family in Apollo, Pennsylvania, has been reunited with their beloved pet 10 years after the dog went missing. Abby’s owner, Debra Suierveld, said that that the dog, together with her kids, was playing in the backyard of their home when she ran off and never came back.  She was one year old during that time, and even though the whole family searched everywhere for her, Abby was nowhere to be found.

After several weeks of searching, the family had given up and declared Abby the black lab is dead.

10 years ago, Debra Suierveld, the owner of Abby, together with her children were playing with the one-year-old pup in the backyard of their home in Apollo, Pennsylvania. At some point, the dog ran off, and even though the family searched everywhere for her, she was nowhere to be found. After some time searching with no luck, the heartbroken family declared Abby dead.

A decade later, someone called the family informing them that someone had found the black lab.

Fortunately, Abby has a microchip, which allowed the volunteers from the Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley to trace where she came from. George Speiring immediately called the animal rescue center after Abby showed up on his front porch in Lower Burrell, 10 miles west of Apollo.

Someone had taken good care of her over the years, however, she may have gotten lost the second time and ended up on Speiring’s front porch.

“Abby is in great health and remembers things the family taught her,” Suierveld said.

“She would lie on the floor and cross her paws and she remembers my daughter’s commands and she remembers the commands I taught her,” Suierveld told KDKA-TV.

Suierveld immediately called her 22-year-old daughter, who is a student at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, to share the good news.

“She cried,” Suierveld told the Tribune-Review.

The whole family has already planned a reunion dinner on Sunday to welcome Abby the black lab back.

“It feels like a part of my kids’ childhood is back, part of our family is back,” Suierveld said. “It’s pretty awesome.”
